James' Milkman Diaries

by james 5. December 2008 10:33

(i) The task at hand

To hand deliver milk bottles sporting our specially designed collar artwork (see below) in their hundreds to businesses in the Birmingham & Solihull area, further raising our profile as a creative marketing resource and to create impact and grab attention.

(ii) The day arrives

Bright eyed and bushy tailed one Thursday morning (or at least bleary eyed and armed with red bull), Mike & I met at Baileys headquarters at 0645 hours, there to be greeted by our payload: milk, lots of milk (kindly ordered by Jill the previous afternoon I hasten to add). The car was loaded and off we went, over the course of 4 days of mornings, first to our Solihull neighbours, then to nearby Shirley, and on towards Birmingham.

Before we knew it we were into our stride, like a well-oiled machine, hand delivering the many bottles one at a time, strategically leaving them in clear view for the unsuspecting work-bound employee's inspection, we couldn't help but notice that this was strangely quite fun, oddly addictive, and alarmingly smelly, undeterred we pressed on.

For purposes of impact we tried to remain anonymous, and this led to some odd behaviour on our part, feeling somehow quite naughty and impish, scuttling gollum-like to the doorstep, depositing the dairy treat and promptly scarpering sharpish, convinced of being caught redhanded.

Several days of early starts and slow afternoons slumped over our desks followed, however the sheer cheek of the feat, the adrenaline of outwitting security (!) and lets be honest, the caffeine, ensured a good time was had by all, and there was much rejoicing. There cant be too many jobs out there quite as odd as ours, it has been suggested that next time we deliver breakfast sandwiches with the message ‘lets meat’, it had been a long day.

(iii) The Aftermath

What benefit, one might ask, came from the experience? A well deserved sausage batch would be up there, a renewed appreciation for the humble lie-in, the thrill of seeing a bottle disappear before our very eyes to be debated and discussed, hugely positive feedback and no shortage of interest from some who knew of Baileys and others who didn't. Profile raised. Job done... For now.
